The Matrox drivers Why that messed with the spooler service is beyond me. But once I removed the drivers and PowerDesk, all was right with the world. Oh, and stopping and restarting the spooler service might work too, rather than restarting the whole system. Do you see any unusual errors in the event viewer? Maybe a port monitor error? Im thinking that perhaps the spooler is trying to get some info off the server or the printers themselvs Otherwise, check to see how much if any network activity is going on.
And as MLO stated, just restarting the spooler should be sufficient. Try it Anyone found a solution? My problem occured when using an early, unsigned, novell client. Upgrading to 4. Then I got hte problem again installing our new HP Downloaded signed drivers and its fixed. Basically, if a driver is not digitally signed, Windows2k overwrites certain files to protect itself, which causes problems when using the device.
I guess this is right, please correct me if its not. Just trying to increase the awareness level of this problem and what triggers it. Downloaded new copy of HP driver. Seems to be working fine. Have just found this site which promices a fix. If not, set it to automatic option and then start the service. Hope this will solve ur problem irrespective of the type of printer. If not, lets pray to GOD to help us to solve the problem without the huge task of re-installing or over-installing the whole operating system.
Bye RE: Spoolsv. Some temporary files get left hanging around, which you've got to delete. Then restart the spooler or restart the system and hey presto: your printers will be back and the system will not crash. Works for me! EXE - Error after searching and reading forums after forums. I was able to re-install my printer.
My printer is printing as usually and haven't encountered any problems knocking on wood. As for everyone else, Thanx for the info! Scanner installed Ok, but at the step of printer installation get a message that "Spooler service is not started, Start now?
Cannot directly add printer either "not enough resources. Printer sybsystem unavailable". Spooler service cannot be started "dependent service was deleted" -- I think it was one when I tried to install printer. Jamjjoy, how to run repair fron Win2k CD??? Anything else failed and I hate to do a clean Win2K setup one more time The tip about deleting the spool file entries for the printer as mentioned above is critical. If you do not delete the files, each time you restart the SPOOLSV or go into the Services section of Administrative Tools in the Control Panel, the spooler will try to print the garbage files and crap out again before you get a chance to delete the printer and reinstall.
Again make sure you have a new driver if you have an older printer, or W2k will take it upon itself to substitute things. The last resort is the Registry edit described in the "down under tech" reply. This is the only dangerous recommendation, not for the timid. Thanks to all the contributors. This error is probably in most people's futures. I got a program error on startup Win2k :"spoolsv. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created". The print subsystem is unavailable".
Without the printer icon you can't easily delete the offending Lexmark Z31 driver files! You'll have to search through some of the folders. Disclaimer: As noted in other posts deleting register information can be dangerous. Do so at your own risk! I would restart the computer here. Problem solved! Of course, not once during installation does it indicate compatibility requirements BTW, this problem occurred on two of my machines The other was a Win2k upgrade from NT.
No error message on bootup and was able to install the service pack. Thanx to all those who posted this fix. I have no reason to be running the spooler. It's only necessary if you are running as a print server or if a printer is directly connected.
I'm having the problem trying to print to various printers on my network I've tried four different ones at this point -- two are Laserjet 5m's, the other two are Color Laserjet I also have no. After my last reboot, I've noticed that all my defined network printers have disappeared, and I'm getting the "Out of Resources: Printer operation cannot continue due to a lack of resources.
The print subsystem is unavailable" message when I try to add a printer. I can go for days and not need a printer. It figures the one day I really need one something like this would happen. I tried reinstalling the SP to see it there was any issues with that. Didnt work. Also went in to the registry and deleted keys for the printer under control set. This did not resolve the issue.
Thank you. I'm still looking into this but: Do you have plenty of diskspace? The spooler will stop when it reaches a certain diskspace limitation.
Have you updated the drivers on the server to the latest version? HoopaJoop, Thanks. Which drivers are you refering to? The printer drivers? In terms of drivespace the "C" System drive has a capacity of 36 gig and free space of 34 gig.
The "G" drive which contains the spool folder has a capacity of 34 gig and free space of 34 gig very little used. I apologize for posting in the wrong group. Thanks again.
