The film's big winner, as has pretty much always been true, is Eugene Levy as Jim's Dad. What the latest instalment to the American Pie series reveals is just how deceptively sentimental and conservative the franchise is beneath its facade of sexual bawdiness. It all seems rather awkward and sad. A subplot involving Jim and the teenage girl he baby-sat especially creeped me out. We like these characters, they like each other and they still have a couple of good jokes left in them.
Mostly, though, they hang around being pleasant but indistinct. It has some sweet moments and of course, some very awkward but hysterical ones, and remains one of those films you'd still hate to watch with your parents.
No, this isn't as good as the original film. Sequels rarely are. But it's a fun trip down memory lane for those of us who came of age along with the gang. It's simple: If you're a fan of the franchise, you will like the movie.
